1923 is the Yellowstone prequel that fans can’t stop talking about. The show is set to begin streaming on the Paramount Plus app on December 18. However, there may be some questions regarding the series. Fans of the franchise know that the show revolves around the Dutton family. The flagship series is all about John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children as they fight to keep the land their ancestors owned and farmed.

Yellowstone is set in the present day, and has given fans plenty of crazy moments. the show has now spawned two prequel series. The first was 1883. The show told the story of the first Dutton family members to settle in Montana. Starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the show followed the Duttons as they traveled on the Oregon Trail. Fans may remember that in 1883, James Dutton (McGraw) mentioned his brother Jacob. Ford will be portraying the role of Jacob Dutton, and it seems that he and his wife, Cara Dutton (Mirren) take over the land and the ranch following James’ death, per Yahoo.

Some viewers may recall the scene from Yellowstone which shows a flashback of James Dutton as a man of the law. He and a group of other men set out to find horse thieves and bring them to justice. After they do, James rides home to reunite with his family. However, it’s revealed that he’s been shot. James looks to be bleeding heavily and then collapses when he walks through the front door of the family home.

Because Jacob is revealed to be the brother of James, he also has strong family ties to John Dutton. James was John’s great-great-grandfather. This makes Jacob’s John’s great-great-grand-uncle. Of course there are other John Dutton’s as Costner’s character is the third family member to wear the name. His late baby grandson was the fourth member of the family to have the name.

Yellowstone fans will see more of Jacob Dutton and his family when 1923 begins streaming on Paramount Plus. Perhaps fans will even see more of the prequel character in flashbacks on Yellowstone as well. So stay tuned!
