Bret Michaels Shares Scary Health Update

Bret Michaels, lead singer of the rock band Poison and solo singer and songwriter, recently shared some scary news with his fans. The “Every Rose” hitmaker has had quite the life, on and off the road. But when it comes to his health issues, at 60, he is a true survivor.

Bret Michaels Shares How Jimmy Buffett’s Death May Have Saved His Life

Poison frontman Bret Michaels reveals that the passing of his dear old friend, music icon Jimmy Buffett, pushed him to look at his life. Bret and Jimmy were longtime friends, and the two had a lot in common, according to Michaels.

Bret says he was saddened to hear the news of his friend Jimmy Buffett’s recent passing. Buffett sadly died on September 1, 2023, at age 76. The Margaritaville singer died after a four-year battle with Merkel cell skin cancer.

The singer recently took to social media to share his scary health issue. Bret tells his FaceBook followers that Jimmy’s death prompted him to see his doctor to check a problem he had been experiencing, which may have saved his life.

Bret Undergoes Surgical Procedure

On Tuesday, October 3, Bret Michaels shared a post with his fans and a post-surgery photo of the left side of his stomach. He also shared the following message and cautionary tale with his followers, writing, “Just knowing that I absolutely love the outdoors & the sun, but with the recent passing of my friend Jimmy Buffett, I decided it was time for a more recent check-up of something I thought was nothing.”

This Is Not Michaels’ First Skin Cancer Scare

This is not the first time Bret Michaels has faced a skin cancer scare. In January 2020, Bret announced that he underwent treatment for skin cancer. Then, in March, he opened up about his surgery to remove a patch of skin cancer.

Bret stated, “What happened was… I’m a guy, I admit it. I like being out in the sun, I like having a great time. I usually do the right thing and spray and protect, but sometimes, it’s not gonna stop it. And it happened, and we thought we got it, and then when it came back, it took it to another level. It got a little scary for a moment, but all is great.

“The thing is, and I say this all the time, I’m one of those guys — I’m hands-on, I’m living it, I’m doing it, and with it just comes all the years, again, as we’ve talked a zillion times, about being a diabetic,” he continued. “As best as you take care of your health, things are just gonna happen. You just keep on keeping on and rocking. I’m here to have another great tour and another great year.”

Bret Michaels is a True Survivor

When facing adversity and fear, Bret Michael has looked it in the eye on more than one occasion throughout his lifetime. Fans of the singer know that Bret often shares his insane health history with his fans. He has had quite the medical ride for a man of 60.

Not only has Bret lived with Type 1 diabetes since childhood, but he also suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage in 2010. Following his recovery, it was discovered that the singer also had a hole in his heart, which was repaired in 2011, and kidney surgery in 2014.

Bret often laughs about his long medical history, saying that it is his experience that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” He refers to his long list of medical procedures as “Michaels’s Law,” using a light-hearted play on words for “Murphy’s Law.”

Bret’s Strong Will Keeps Him Going

If there is one thing that Bret Michaels refuses to do in life, it is give up. He is there to see it through. Whether with his family, his daughters, Raine and Jorga, his music, his health, or his fans.

Bret Michaels is living life on his terms and enjoying every moment. He loves his life; fans can see that every time he steps on stage. He’s also a road warrior who plays upward of a hundred shows a year with Poison or the Bret Michaels Band. He cares about his fans and is an active and caring philanthropist.

The rocker is always on the road and raising money and awareness for not only diabetic causes but St. Jude Children’s Hospital and PetSmart charities. He is also a relentless supporter of our veterans and our military.

Bret Michaels credits his parents for his strong will. “When I hit that stage, it’s with pure gratitude. I believe that the more you succeed, the more it comes at you. When I was a kid, my parents gave me ‘Winners Never Quit, Quitters Never Win’ to help me deal with my diabetes. They wanted me to be victorious, not a victim.” And this is exactly the way Bret Michaels says he has and will continue to live out his life.
