Singing sensation Carly Simon has suffered a double family tragedy. The “Your So Vain” hitmaker has sadly lost two sisters to cancer within 24 hours. Carly confirmed in a statement on Sunday her sad loss.
Simon’s statement reads, “I am filled with sorrow to speak about the passing of Joanna and Lucy Simon,” Carly Simon said. “Their loss will be long and haunting. But, as sad as this day is, it’s impossible to mourn them without celebrating their incredible lives.”
The 77-year-old singer’s two sisters tragically passed away within one day, sadly losing their battles with cancer. Joanna Simon passed away at age 85, one day before her 86th birthday, after a long battle with thyroid cancer. Lucy Simon died on Thursday at age 82 from breast cancer.
Simon’s Family Plagued By Cancer
Joanna Simon was the oldest of four siblings. She is best known for her smoky-voiced mezzo-soprano opera. She married Gerald Walker in 1976 until he died in 2004, and afterward dated CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite until he died in 2009.
Joanna is credited with numerous appearances on The Tonight Show. In addition, she was the co-host of Ovation magazine’s Classical awards and was a presenter at the 1971 Grammy Awards.
Lucy Simon is best known as a member of the folk music duo the Simon Sisters. Lucy joined her younger sister, Carly Simon, releasing three albums from 1964 to 1969. The sisters are best known for their hit “Winkin’, Blinkin’ And Nod,” the duo’s hottest single that reached 73 on the Billboard Hot 100.
After taking, a break from the music business, Lucy returned with two solo albums. She won two Grammy awards in the 1980s for her work on “In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record” and “In Harmony 2.”
Lucy leaves behind her husband, David Levine, two children, four grandchildren, and her sister, Carly. Joanna and Lucy were preceded in death by their younger brother, Peter Simon. Peter was a nationally acclaimed photographer. He also succeeded as a photojournalist, author, and music historian. Peter died from a heart attack while battling lung cancer in 2018 at 71.
Carly Pays Tribute To Simon Sisters
Carly stated of her sisters, “They touched everyone they knew. Those of us they’ve left behind will be lucky and honored to carry their memories forward.”
The multi-award-winning entertainer and grieving sister adds;
“We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another. We were each others’ secret shares,” Simon said. “The co-keepers of each other’s memories. I have no words to explain the feeling of suddenly being the only remaining direct offspring of Richard and Andrea Simon.”
