Cavaliers’ Guard Collin Sexton’s Chances of Getting An Extension Revealed

Cleveland Cavaliers player Collin Sexton

Cleveland Cavaliers’ young shooting guard and leading scorer Collin Sexton has had his name thrown around in trade rumors for the past month or so but it seems at least for now he is in Cleveland to stay.

Sexton is coming off his best season yet where he averaged 24 points per game, 3 rebounds per game, and 4 assists per game. But these stats have still failed to get Sexton a max contract extension from the Cavaliers.

“In a recent episode of the Wine and Gold Talk Podcast, Cavs insider Chris Fedor gave an update on the status of Sexton’s next deal. “I think there’s a recognition on Collins’s part that they’re not getting the max, not from Cleveland and not from another team in the NBA,” according to Cavs Nation.

Collin Sexton has gotten better every season so far but there are still many flaws in his game that are keeping Cleveland hesitant on a max extension. One criticism of Sexton is that he doesn’t share the ball enough.

Is Collin Sexton headed for a new contract?

Sexton averaged 4 assists per game last season but was also Cleveland’s leading scorer. For a shooting guard those are solid numbers, he can still distribute the ball but appears to have a score-first mentality.

There are so many reasons to love Collin Sexton. He is a workhorse, he loves Cleveland and has said that ever since he was drafted there, and he has no off-court drama. He may not pass the ball as much as his backcourt buddy Darius Garland but when Garland missed five games in May Sexton dished out six assists per game, and he kept his scoring numbers up.

It will be very interesting to see if Sexton gets his extension and if he does how much it will be. Even if the Cavs don’t feel like Collin needs a max contract, many fans feel that he deserves a new contract.

It really comes down to his passing game among some other smaller issues so it will be interesting to see if he can get those numbers up in the upcoming NBA season. As the Cavs are looking to be back in playoff contention they will need all the help they can get out of their young core and Sexton will have to be one of the guys leading the charge.
