Emoni Bates
Emoni Bates

When Emoni Bates stepped onto the court for his first summer league game for the Cleveland Cavaliers all eyes were on him. It is not every season that the 49th pick steps onto the summer league court with this kind of attention, but Bates is not your average 49th pick.

Who Is Emoni Bates?

Many things have happened since Bates was considered the best player out of his recruiting class. A rough NCAA career as well as off-the-court troubles plagued the young man. This led “the next Kevin Durant” to nearly go undrafted in 2023. Bates, playing for his NBA career’s life, struggled in his first game. According to FaerTheSword.com, Bates posted a 5-18 game with 0 assists and 3 turnovers.

All the worries about his shot selection and efficiency were proven right after just one game. Rather than spiraling, Bates took all of the criticisms from the media and the coaches and came out swinging. Bates displayed rapid growth in every other game after his first. Emoji Bates finished summer league averaging 17 points on 40% shooting from three. He earned himself on the all-summer league second team and a championship.

The Cleveland Cavaliers watched as Bates adjusted his game so the team could get the most use out of him. There were still a few ill-advised shots, but this was a huge step forward for the young man. Playing as a willing facilitator, Bates was a cog in the machine instead of the wrench he used to be. A better shot chart started appearing as Bates’ catch-and-shoot was deadly. As well as the occasional pull-up jumper that made him a top prospect back in the day.

The Steal Of The Draft!

Bates realized that he is more of a shot-maker than a shot-creator.  A hand in his face does not deter him due to his height and speed. When Bates is rolling we see glimpses of a generational talent that should make everyone jealous. Bates will eventually face the same fate as every great shooter, a cold streak. This is where he can impact the game in a different way.

Bates’ height and speed can be used for defensive purposes as well. Playing within the team Bates had some very impressive blocks and really showed his ability to be a rounded player. It will be very interesting to see how Emoni Bates will develop for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland may have gotten the steal of the draft and it is really showing so far!
