Cobra Kai has become a quick hit since its move from YouTube to Netflix. Now, there’s talks of a spin-off for the Karate Kid sequel series. There are a few options when it comes to planning a new story, but an obvious one includes exploring John Kreese’s backstory.

Fans who watched Cobra Kai Season 3 on Netflix know that the show dived into Kreese’s younger years a bit. The storyline revealed Kreese during his time in Vietnam. That time led to the beginnings of the dojo he would later train Johnny Lawrence at.

Cobra Kai spin off is a real possibility

During Season 3, fans saw Kreese as a young man fresh out of high school with not much direction. He was working at a diner and getting bullied. It was also revealed that his mother had killed herself. Finally, after deciding to change his life and stand up for himself he enlisted in the army.

However, things took a dark turn for Kreese. His commanding officer taught him karate and then led he and a few others on a mission. They were eventually captured and forced to fight one another to the death. The impact of the situation left a mark with Kreese, who took the hard lessons he learned and turned it into Cobra Kai.

“Our hope is that we can really expand this whole Karate Kid universe and reinvigorate the fanbase so that it’s a story we can continue telling,” EP and co-showrunner Hayden Schlossberg said, per Movie Web. “We do have an endgame for Cobra Kai, but we always compare it to our other favorite show, Breaking Bad, [and how] they’re able to keep the story going with Better Call Saul and El Camino.”

“If you look at our careers, we’ve always had sequels. We fall in love with our characters,” Schlossberg added. “Every permutation of spinoff or deep-dive crosses our minds. It all has to be the right thing, and it has to be the same level of quality that Cobra Kai is. Our minds are always thinking Karate Kid, so that possibility is definitely out there.”

A deeper dive into John Kreese’s life?

With that, he hinted at a possible John Kreese continuation. During Season 3 of Cobra Kai, it was actor Martin Kove’s real-life son, Jesse Kove, who appeared as the younger version of his father’s character. Could we be seeing Jesse again in a spin off?

“We spend time with Kreese’s backstory [in Season 3], but we could’ve spent more time with Kreese’s backstory. We have so many things to tell in these half-hour episodes, it ends up not being enough. We’re just having a fun time as friends getting to work in the sandbox of The Karate Kid and hope to keep it going.”

Cobra Kai Seasons 1-3 are currently streaming on Netflix.
