Dan Levy is revealing one big secret behind his beloved comedy series, Schitt’s Creek. The actor recently opened up about what gave him the inspiration for the series, and it includes another Hollywood star.

Many fans know Schitt’s Creek after binge watching the series on Netflix. The Canadian series blew up on the streaming site and garnered a ton of new fans. The show was so popular that the final season cleaned up at the Emmy’s sweeping their categories, with awards for all four of the main stars.

Dan Levy’s Schitt’s Creek inspiration revealed

Variety reports that Dan started off his career at MTV Canada, where he worked as a co-host. He later found himself in Los Angeles wanting to be a writer. After getting interested in reality TV he began to think about what would happen if famous, wealthy families lost their money.

“I had been watching some reality TV at the time and was concentrating on what would happen if one of these wealthy families would lose everything. Would the Kardashians still be the Kardashians without their money?” he told Out.

In addition, Levy drew inspiration from actress Kim Basinger, who bought a town in Georgia, hence the idea for Schitt’s Creek was born.

“In the process, I stumbled upon an article about Kim Basinger having bought this town in Georgia,” he told Vanity Fair.

“Unfortunately, it took a probably very traumatizing experience in Kim Basinger’s life for us to get here, but yeah … It was the most unlikely of Google searches,” he added.

Of course, Dan consulted his actor father, Eugene Levy, who has been a comedy actor for decades. The two worked on the idea together and eventually created the series that would earn the father/son duo some major accolades.

Eventually, Dan and Eugene agreed that it was time to end the series, and wanted to do so while there was still an interest in the characters.

“I think … the fans of the show, have really come to rely on it as like a safe space in a dark time. The thought of pushing that past its expiry date for the sake of just being able to do another season—I care too much about our viewers and about our characters to risk taking them farther than they need to be taken,” Dan told E! News back in 2019.
