David Lander, who is best known to classic television fans as Squiggy on the hit comedy series Laverne & Shirley has died at the age of 73. The actor passed away on Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. of complications from multiple sclerosis according to TMZ reports.

According to David’s family, the actor battled MS for more than 37-years. Lander went public with his diagnosis in 1999. Lander has worked closely with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, speaking out about his experience at related conferences.
Classic television fans will remember Lander best for his comic role as Squiggy in the hit 70’s sitcom Laverne & Shirley. Lander starred alongside close pal and longtime friend Michael McKean who played greaser pal Lenny.
Classic TV fans mourn the loss of the actor
In 1983, Lander was diagnosed with MS. However, the actor kept his illness from the public until 1999 when he decided it was time to tell his story. Lander spoke candidly of his struggles in his memoir, Fall Down Laughing: How Squiggy Caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn’t Tell Nobody.
Meanwhile, Lander has a long line of successful acting credits. Following his role in Laverne & Shirley, he appeared in classic television shows. TV buffs will remember Lander guest roles on The Bob Newhart Show, Barney Miller, Happy Days, Viva Valdez, Twin Peaks and The Drew Carey Show.
Lander’s multiple acting credits revealed
In addition, Lander also had a successful career as a voice actor in hit films including Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was credited as Stephen Lander in Boo and Zino and the Snurks movie . He also voiced Chip in the DC Comics animated, Green Lantern: First Flight in 2009.
David Lander’s most recently lent his voice to Rumpelstiltskin in Disney’s children’s show, Goldie & Bear, and Donnie the Shark in an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants in 2016.
Lander is survived by his beloved wife of 41-years Kathy, and his daughter Natalie. David’s family hopes his fans will remember him for all the laughter he brought into the world.
The actor’s fans were devastated to hear the news of his passing. Many took to Twitter to share their thoughts and send love to his family members and friends. However, he’ll always be remembered for his loveable Laverne & Shirley character who also put a smile on the faces of viewers. He’s preceded in death by his co-star, Penny Marshall, who played Laverne on the show.
