“Days of Our Lives” fans are about to lose two fan favorite characters. Freddie Smith who plays Sonny Kiriakis, and Molly Burnett, who portrays Melanie Jonas will both be leaving Salem very soon.
‘Days of Our Lives’ Shocker: Freddie Smith, Molly Burnett Exit
Soap Opera Digest confirms the shocking news that Freddie Smith has left “Days of Our Lives” and that Sonny Kiriakis will last air sometime in August. There is no word on whether or not the character will be recast much like Sonny’s husband, Will Horton, was when Chandler Massey left the role and Guy Wilson stepped in last year.
More Characters Returning
Meanwhile, Molly Burnett’s Melanie Jonas will also soon be gone from Salem. Molly had only signed a 6-month contract and was never long for the soap. It’s possible that she only wanted to return as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebration, which will also see Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady), Peter Reckell (Bo Brady), and Stephen Nichols (Steve “Patch” Johnson) return as well.
As for Melanie and Brady’s relationship, well it looks like he’ll have one less woman in his life when Mel exits, which might not be a bad thing as he’ll still be dealing with the fallout of Kristen DiMera returning to Salem with his child in tow, a child that was mothered by his volatile ex-girlfriend Theresa Donovan.
