Dexter isn’t dead. The show will reportedly continue on with a brand new prequel focused on the Trinity Killer. According to Deadline, Showtime has a show in the works. This series would likely be binged by Dexter fans. As viewers will remember, the Trinity Killer was previously portrayed by actor John Lithgow.
During the original Dexter series, Trinity aka Arthur Mitchell, killed his victims in threes. Dexter hunted Trinity, and it backfired. Once Trinity found out Dexter’s identity he reversed the roles and murdered Dexter’s wife Rita before Dexter could kill him. Although Dexter did claim Trinity as a victim, his life was changed forever.
Dexter Prequel will feature The Trinity Killer
Dexter went on to become a single father to his and Rita’s young son, Harrison. Later, he faked his death and started a new life. In 2021, the show returned for a revival titled Dexter: New Blood. The show old the story of what Dexter had been doing since his presumed death. Harrison, now a teenager, tracked his father down and wanted answers.
However, it turned out that Harrison had the same “dark passenger” that Dexter dealt with. Dexter and Harrison struggled to bond, but eventually came to an understanding. Sadly, Harrison was forced to kill his own father at the end of the season. Fans wondered if New Blood would return for another season, possibly with Dexter still alive, or following Harrison’s story.
Currently, there aren’t any details about the Trinity Killer prequel. There hasn’t been any casting announcements, and the show is said to be in the early stages of development. According to IGN, the Dexter franchise is now using the Yellowstone model. The universe will expand with spin-offs and prequel shows, much like Yellowstone has done with 1883, 1923, and the upcoming spin-off 6666.
Another Dexter show is also in the works at Showtime
In addition to the Trinity Killer prequel series, Dexter Morgan will also be back for another series. The show will explore a younger version of Dexter, and include characters introduced in the original show.
Dexter: Origins “will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become.” The show will take place in Miami like the flagship series. Young Dexter will join the Miami Metro police department straight out of college.
It will be interesting to see where the Dexter universe goes with these two new shows. However, fans are thrilled to be getting fresh Dexter content and can’t wait to see where it leads.
