‘Dexter’ Is Returning To Showtime: Here’s What To Remember About The Original Series

Dexter Morgan is officially back. The fan favorite serial killer is returning to Showtime in 2021 for a limited series revival. The 10-episode Season 9 is already making waves with fans, many of whom are excited to see what the character has been up to.

Since there will be eight years in between the Season 8 series finale and the Season 9 revival, Dexter fans may need a crash course of important moments to remember before they dive into the upcoming 10-episode limited series.

Dexter worked for the police

Dexter Morgan worked for Miami Metro police in the forensics department. He had a specialty in blood spatter. Dexter’s father was a police officer who adopted him after his mother was murdered when he was a baby.

Dexter’s father noticed that his young son displayed serial killer tendencies and realized that his “dark passenger” wasn’t going to go away with therapy or medication. Knowing that Dexter would kill, he taught his son to seek out evil people and exterminate them from the world.

His father trained him for murder

Working for the police allowed Dexter to seek out the monsters, which he would kidnap and take to a “kill room,” that he had plastered with plastic sheets and his killing tools. He would then clean up the murder scene as only a pro could do, disect the bodies, and dump the corpses into the ocean.

Dexter tried to live a normal life. He even had a girlfriend named Rita. Rita was a single mother to two children. Dexter and Rita eventually got married and had a son of their own named Harrison. However, Dexter’s serial killer ways were nearly exposed in each season.

During the insane Season 5 finale, his involvement with another serial killer nicknamed “Trinity” for killing in threes every few years, ended with his wife being murdered in their home.

His sister, Deb, kept him grounded.

Dexter then found himself as a single father to three children. Thankfully, he had his loving sister, Deb, to help him through life. Deb was also a police officer, and was often hot on Dexter’s trail. She eventually found out his shocking secret, and struggled to keep it safe.

By the end of the series, Deb had shockingly died, and Dexter had lost the only person who kept him grounded. He sent his son, Harrison, off with his girlfriend, who was also a serial killer, and appeared to die in a boating accident.

However, the final episode then flashed to Dexter living his life in solitary as a lumberjack.
