Friends Monica and Chandler's wedding

Friends: Why Monica Was Never Supposed To Marry Chandler

Friends is one of the most beloved TV show’s ever. Of course, characters Monica and Chandler were the heart and soul of the series. While each of the characters offered their own unique personality traits, epic storylines, and amazing qualities, Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing were the ultimate Friends couple. They were much more steady than Ross and Rachel over the years!

The writers ultimately decided to have Monica and Chandler spend the night together when the gang was in London for the wedding of Ross and Emily. That moment made for one of the best Friends episodes ever. However, the relationship wasn’t supposed to take off from there. The pair were supposed to go back to being just friends and leave their romantic night in the past. Of course, that never happened and it was all because of the loyal Friends fans. The show’s viewers absolutely fell in love with the pairing of Monica and Chandler.

“When Monica popped up from beneath the sheets, there was just this explosion from the audience,” Executive producer Scott Silveri told Vulture in 2013. “It was a combination of a laugh/gasp/cry/shriek. They were just blown away by it. It was so intense, for the second or third takes, instead of watching the monitors, I just turned around and watched the audience.”

Friends fans kept Monica and Chandler together

Silveri went on to say that Monica and Chandler’s romance was the thing that kept Friends on the air for so long. He also added that the show would have ended much sooner if the pairing had never been explored in depth.

“If you didn’t have a Monica-and-Chandler relationship, if the center of Friends had remained Ross and Rachel, you would’ve seen a much shorter shelf life for the show,” Silveri said. “Without Monica and Chandler, it ends three years earlier. I don’t owe my whole house to them, but at least two bedrooms and a bath are because of them.”

In 2021, the cast of Friends got together for a reunion on HBO Max. Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow got together. Of course, they were joined by Monica and Chandler actors Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry. During the reunion, the cast was asked where their characters would be in the present day.

Where would Monica and Chandler be today?

“I think Monica is still really competitive,” Cox said (via Entertainment Weekly). “Her kids are probably not even in, they’re probably graduated, but she still is in charge of the bake sale at elementary school, she’s just got to keep things going, PTA.” She added, “And you are making me laugh every day,” directing the comment toward Perry.

Thankfully, Friends did keep Monica and Chandler together and allowed them to not only get married but build a family together as viewers watched their lives unfold. Now, the show lives on his pop culture history with Monica and Chandler’s iconic love story.
