HBO’s The Last Of Us Season 1 Episode 1 has aired as we now look to break down the premier. While it is too soon to decide if HBO’s The Last Of Us adaptation will be a classic, Episode 1 started the story with a bang. The episode being titled “When You’re Lost In The Darkness” is of course a nod to the franchises’ militia group The Fireflies. Every good movie, game, or show in the zombie genre needs a good way to see it happen. HBO’s The Last Of Us has Joel and Sarah Miller’s neighbors.

While Sarah is over baking cookies with her friendly neighbors you can see their elderly and sick mother start showing signs of infection. She begins to twitch uncontrollably just like the infected in the games. Fast forward a few hours Sarah is woken up by explosions.

The Outbreak Day

She rushes outside where she then notices some strange noises coming from the house next to hers. She walks in to see blood on the floor as the old woman has turned and is eating her caretakers. Joel, Tommy, and Sarah now have to make it out of the city as they try to dodge infected, explosions, and trigger-happy soldiers. After they wreck their truck which causes Sarah to break her ankle. Joel’s Life Changes Forever

Sarah dies in Joel’s arms and this is a defining moment for the Character for the rest of his life. The story jumps twenty years into the future as we see Joel living in a quarantine zone in Boston. Joel and Tommy had a falling out and Joel is worried about his brother being alone in the deadly world.

Joel and his partner Tess are trying to get a car battery so they can drive out and check on Tommy. Tess realizes that their battery has been sold to the Fireflies. They now have to do a job for them to get a military-grade vehicle.

The job is to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie out of the QZ and to the capitol building in downtown Boston. The Episode ends with Joel, Tess, and Ellie leaving the QZ as they are held up by a soldier. He scans them all for infection before they take him down. Ellie’s test shows she is in fact infected as she frantically explains that she is immune.
