Ian Somerhalder is finally weighing in on the rumors that his hit show, The Vampire Diaries, may return for a revival.
According to E! Online, Ian recently appeared on Andy Cohen’s radio show, where the host asked him pointe blank about the whether or not he’s planning to reprise his role as Damon Salvatore for Season 9 of TVD.
Ian Somerhalder debunks rumors of a Vampire Diaries revival
“[There are] rumors circling online that it could come back for a ninth season, but that the decision is up to you and Nina [Dobrev]. Any truth to that?” Cohen asked Somerhalder.
As fans will remember, when the series ended Damon and Elena had both taken the cure for vampirism and become human. In addition, Damon’s younger brother, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) had sacrificed his life to save the town of Mystic Falls. He then passed on to the afterlife, where his best friend, Lexi, was waiting for him.
“What would happen? Damon would have like, gray hair and they’d have canes. Like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to feed the baby,'” Ian joked.
“Listen, it ran a great course,” Somerhalder admitted of The Vampire Diaries, seemingly crushing the hopes of fans who are still holding on to the possibility of the series returning for a revival.
However, Ian did reveal that he loves how passionate viewers still are about the show and the characters, adding he’s happy that the series lives on on streaming sites such as Netflix. “Now, it’s still living. That’s what’s so amazing.”
The Vampire Diaries centered around Elena Gilbert (Dobrev). She meets Stefan Salvatore and falls in love. However, it’s his older brother, Damon, who eventually wins her heart. Damon and Elena have become a fan favorite characters among avid TV watchers.
In real-life, Dobrev and Somerhalder shared sparks off-screen as well. The duo started dating in 2010, but called it quits in 2013 after dating for over three years. Currently, Ian is married to Twilight actress Nikki Reed. The couple share one child together. Nina is now dating Olympic snowboarder Shaun White.
Fans are still obsessed with the series
Even though it doesn’t seem like The Vampire Diaries will ever return for a revival or reboot, a new generation of fans has grown to love the show thanks to streaming sites that allow viewers to binge watch the entire series at their own pace, or re-watch the show over and over as many times
