Presley reveals she is totally haunted by Graceland’s “damn back lawn” and what that lawn contains. Graceland will always be home to Lisa Marie. She reveals she spends every Christmas at the mansion.
Lisa Marie Presley troubled by family graveyard
Not much has changed at Graceland since Elvis died on August 16, 1977. Today, the mansion is both a home and a museum. Lisa reflects on spending days with her father. She speaks fondly of times she and Elvis raced golf carts outside the gardens.
Today, at 53, Lisa Marie reveals she is often troubled by the gardens. The part that has become known as the family graveyard. Lisa is so troubled by the family graveyard that she has even written about them in the past.
Her 2003 song “Lights Out” dives into her personal and yet painful feelings about the garden plots.
One of the verses says: “Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis, That’s where my family’s buried and gone. Last time I was there I noticed a space left, Next to them there in Memphis, In the damn back lawn.”
In past interviews when asked about the lyrics Lisa answered she had to use the phrase “Damn back lawn” because saying ‘mother****ing back lawn didn’t work melodically.”
Lisa explains that Graceland’s back lawn is a graveyard. “How many people are reminded of their fate, their mortality, every ****ing day?”
Late son Benjamin Keough buried in the family graveyard
In July of last year, the Meditation Garden at the mansion housed the graves of Lisa’s father, Elvis Presley, her grandparents Vernon and Gladys, and grandmother Minnie Mae.
Sadly, on July 12, Lisa Marie faced every mother’s worst nightmare. She lost her only son Benjamin Storm Keough at the age of 27. Lisa placed her son to rest with his family.
When asked as to whether she would also be buried in the Presley family graveyard, Lisa answers,
“All the graves are lined up. There’s a spot there, waiting for me, right next to my grandmother. I don’t plan on anything. I’m sure I’ll end up there. Or I’ll shrink my head and put it in a glass box in the living room. I’ll get more tourists to Graceland that way.”
