A “Little Women” miniseries is being adapted by PBS. The network who has brought fans gems like “Downton Abbey,” is currently working on turning Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel into a three-part series for Masterpiece.

“Little Women” is set in Massachusetts during the time of the Civil War. The story follows the March family, whose Patriarch is away fighting for the North. During the difficult time, the family is strapped for money, and are forced to work in order to keep their household going.

“Little Women” is based around Jo March as she tells the tale of she and her sisters growing from girls into women in the war-torn country. Meg, the oldest sister is hoped to marry well to help the family with their money situation, while Jo the second oldest is a rebel and a tomboy who loves to read and write. Beth is a gentle soul who likes to stay home with her family by her side, and Amy is a high spirited dreamer, who aspires to have the finer things in life when she grows up.

Of course, there are men in the series as well. Teddy, the boy next door is the leading man, while many other men come and go in the story. Fans of the book know that the book was last adapted into a film back in 1994, which starred Winona Ryder as Jo, Claire Danes as Beth, Susan Sarandon as Mrs. March, and a very young Kirsten Dunst as the child version of Amy.

TV Line reports that “Call the Midwife” creator, Heidi Thomas will write the miniseries adaptation, and couldn’t be more excited about it. “Little Women is one of the most loved novels in the English language, and with good reason. Its humanity, humor and tenderness never date, and as a study of love, grief and growing up it has no equal. There could be no better time to revisit the story of a family striving for happiness in an uncertain world, and I am thrilled to be bringing the March girls to a new generation of viewers.”
