Ja Morant has been the best player on the Memphis Grizzlies since he was selected by the organization in the 2019 NBA draft. After selecting Morant with the second overall pick in that draft, the Grizzlies would look to build a championship team around their new young superstar. However, a history of off-court issues as well as sketchy celebrations dampened those plans. Ja was recently investigated once again by the league after he seemingly flashed finger guns Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors.
The NBA does not take these kinds of things lightly, especially with a repeat offender. However, Ja Morant was able to dodge any kind of suspension or fine from the league. According to CBS Sports, the NBA will take no disparaging actions toward Mr. Morant. However, it was confirmed that the finger gun gesture was made towards the GSW’s bench via Morant. The league then decided that the gesture was not meant to be harmful, although it was inappropriate. However, after launching their investigation, “The league decided against disciplining Morant.”
Ja Morant’s History of Gun-Related Incidents Since He Has Been in the NBA
This would not be the first time Ja has gotten into trouble with the NBA’s higher-ups. The 25-year-old has been suspended multiple times for incidents involving real firearms. Just a few seasons ago, the young man was suspended for eight games after flashing a gun on Instagram at a nightclub in Colorado. Then, in May, Morant was suspended for 25 more games after showing off a gun while in a car during yet another Instagram video. Ja was also investigated for an incident involving a possible firearm when a person inside Morant’s vehicle pointed a red laser at the Indiana Pacers’ team bus.
Ja Morant is an extremely talented young man. However, he continues to show a trend of irresponsibility that could plague his NBA career. The Memphis Grizzlies are a solid team in the Western Conference. They are only one or two pieces away from being true contenders. Although with Ja Morant at the front, it may be a more difficult ride then it could be.
The Grizzlies have also recently fired their head coach right before the beginning of the postseason. Things are a little hectic in Memphis right now. Morant and his team are trying to hang on to the 8th seed. Can they buckle down and stay in the play-in tournament? Or will they crumble under the weight of investigations and pressure? For now, only time will truly tell.
