“Pretty Little Liars” returned for a new episode on Tuesday, and Alison tried to lean on her friends like no time had passed. However, it didn’t quite work out like she expected.
‘Pretty Little Liars’ recap: Season 5, Episode 4 — ‘Thrown From The Ride’
Hannah has a new hair style, which is shorter and has very dark low lights. She and Aria find Shawna’s copy of “The Scarlet Letter,” which they find mysterious passages marked.
Meanwhile, Ali prepares herself to go back to school, and is still getting over the death of her mother. Her father isn’t happy about the idea of her returning to Rosewood High, and wants to move out of the town all together. Ali begs her dad not to move by saying she needs her friends too badly to move away from them.
Spencer tells her mother that her dad and Melissa are hiding something, but Mrs. Hastings thinks that Melissa is only hiding getting back together with Wren, and doesn’t want to talk about anything unpleasant.
Lucas tells Mona that he’s having second thoughts about their plan regarding Alison. He wants to take pity on her, not punish her further, but Mona won’t let up. She wants to continue on, and tells him that she faked her kidnapping.
Emily is now coaching the new girl on the swim team, and runs into Paige after their painful break up.
The girls notice that everyone is staring at them at lunch, including Mona, who is “freaking” Aria out, and may know about Shawna’s death.
Ali’s dad tells her she needs to have a medical examine because the cops require it. She doesn’t want to, and he worries that she may have been sexually abused, which she denies.
Later, Aria searches Shawna’s name, and find a video clip from her funeral, fueling her guilt. Meanwhile, Lucas questions Hanna about Alison.
Hanna gets a call from Ali, who asks her to go to her medical examine with her, and Emily invites Paige to train with her and Sidney.
Spencer invites Andrew to help her fix up her yard after Mrs. D.’s body was found. The two find rat poison in the shed, making Spencer even more suspicious of her family.

Emily, Paige, and Sidney all go out for pizza, and having a great time, but when she sees Mona eyeing her she shuts down.
Hanna takes an anxious Alison to the doctor, and becomes worried about her state of mind, while the rest of the girls talk about how they’ve been keeping their distance from Ali. Ali’s doctor questions a big scar on her leg, which she lies about, and becomes very defensive about. Hanna questions Ali about the scar, and she won’t tell her, saying, “Once you know something, you can’t un-know it.”
Spencer catches her mom looking very upset and afraid, and questions her again. Spencer learns that Ali’s mother was planning on telling the police that she believed Spencer had something to do with the murder of the girl in Ali’s grave, and that her father may have had something to do with Mrs. D.’s murder.
Later, Mona ambushes Paige, and tells her that Ali’s dad wants to move, and wants to change her mind about going. “If you’re not with me, you’re against me,” Mona tells her.
Aria continues to watch the video from Shawna’s funeral over and over again, staring at her dead body in the casket, while Ali searches the internet and finds all sorts of mean comments and photos about herself.
Ali reveals that someone switched her mother’s blood pressure pills, which stopped her heart, and killed her. Spencer tells Ali that she had thought her father killed Mrs. D.
Aria visits Ezra and tells him she can’t stop thinking about Shawna’s family. He tells her to forgive herself.
Paige tells Emily that people are preparing for Ali to come back to school, and that they’re not happy about it, warning Emily to stay away from Alison when she returns to Rosewood High.
Hanna can’t take the stress of living in Ali’s shadow anymore, and finds release by falling into the old habit of shoplifting as a way to cope.
Meanwhile, Spencer finds suspicious pills at her house, making her think that her father may have killed Mrs. D. after all.
Emily finally goes to see Alison, and tells her maybe she should move because it may not be safe for her. Ali becomes upset, and tells her that they’ll all be fine if they stick together.
Spencer tells Aria that she and her mom suspect her father of killing Alison’s mom. Mr. Hastings tells Spencer that he took her mom to a spa because she “snapped,” and Spencer becomes worried.
