Schitt’s Creek actress Emily Hampshire apologizes for Johnny Depp & Amber Heard costume
Emily Hampshire was seen in photos dressed as actor Johnny Depp. In addition, the “Schitt’s Creek” star was a friend dressed as Depp’s former wife, Amber Heard. In the pics, Hampshire held a wine bottle and her friend pretended to cry.
Of course, fans were outraged that the actress would poke fun at Depp and Heard’s domestic violence case and abusive relationship. The star immediately apologized for her behavior and choice of costume.
“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done,” Hampshire said in her Wednesday statement. “For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future I will do better. I’m so sorry,” she added.
Why was Hamphire’s Halloween costume controversial?
The reason why fans called out Emily Hampshire for her Johnny Depp and Amber Heard costume stems from the former celebrity couple’s relationship. Both Depp and Heard have accused each other of domestic violence and sued each other for damages.
In June 2022, the pair went to court in one of the most talked-about celebrity cases of the decade. Startling details about the couple’s volatile marriage were revealed during the trial. The jury awarded Depp $15 million in damages, reduced to $10 million. Heard was also awarded $2 million in damages.
Other celebrities who have been in hot water for Halloween costumes
Of course, Emily Hampshire isn’t the only celebrity to land in hot water for their choice of Halloween costume, per Us Weekly. Over the years, many others have become controversial for their costume choices. In 2008, Heidi Klum sparked debate when she dressed as Hindu Goddess Kali. The following year, Adrienne Curry shocked fans dressed as Amy Winehouse, poking fun at the late singer’s drug abuse issues.
In 2013, “Dancing With The Stars” co-host Julianne Hough dressed as Crazy Eyes from “Orange Is The New Black,” opting to wear blackface, which angered fans.
