The Sith, the ancient enemy of the Jedi order in Star Wars. The Sith are easily recognizable. They wield a bright red lightsaber, wear black robes, and most have dark yellow eyes. The Sith’s numbers are low, and the Jedi order vastly outnumbered them. Why is that? It all goes back to the creation of the rule of two.

While the Jedi had a huge temple and an army of well-trained Jedi knights and masters, the Sith survived for a millennium with just a duo of force-users. It was not always like this though! Long Before the events of Episode One: The Phantom Menace, there were just as many Sith as there were Jedi.

What Is The Rule Of Two?

This large Sith empire was known as the Brotherhood of Darkness. They waged a long and deadly war against the Jedi Order known as the Jedi-Sith Wars. In the aftermath of the bloody conflict emerged a Sith Lord by the name of Darth Bane. Bane saw the flaws of the Sith and in turn, created The Rule Of Two.

What exactly is The Rule Of Two? Well, it states that there can only be two raining Sith Lords at the same time. A master and an apprentice are all there can be. This rule was designed to stop the constant in-fighting that the Sith experienced during their war with the Jedi according to GameRant.com

The Sith master is the embodiment of the dark side. The apprentice yearns for power until they are eventually strong enough to overthrow and kill their master. They then take on their own apprentice and the cycle continues. This is how the Sith have stayed hidden and alive during times of peace.

Sith Lords think inwards, only about themselves. They crave power and will do anything to achieve that power. They use the force for attack while the Jedi use it for defense. Although some Sith broke the rule of two to achieve their power. Darth Sidious had his own Sith assassin named Darth Maul while his master was still alive. Maul was a cunning warrior until he fell in combat by the hand of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Why Is The Rule Of Two Important?

Sidious would then take Count Dooku as his apprentice until he was killed by the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker. Skywalker would then himself fall into the darkness and be reborn as Darth Vader. Vader was feared by all and known by all. Until finally he would return to the light and kill Sidious.

The endless cycle of death that follows the Sith is exactly why they have this Rule Of Two. Without it, The SIth would be nothing but a group plagued by civil war.  This rule is crucial to the story of Star Wars.
