Taylor Swift’s love life has always been a huge topic of conversation. Over the years, the singer has been involved in some very high-profile relationships with very famous men. She’s dated the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Harry Styles, Tom Hiddleston, John Mayer, and more. However, one of her sweetest romances came in 2009 when she began dating Twilight teen heartthrob, Taylor Lautner. Fast forward to today, and these two have transformed their past into a wholesome friendship that’s giving fans all the nostalgic feels.

Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner met on the set of Valentine’s Day, where they played high school sweethearts. Their chemistry quickly spilled off-screen, and by fall 2009, they were spotted together at hockey games and cozy dinners. Swift even cheekily referenced their budding relationship during her Saturday Night Live monologue, singing, “If you’re wondering if I might be dating the werewolf from Twilight…”

However, like many young relationships, the two Taylors couldn’t make things work. By the end of the year, the two had split. Swift later channeled her feelings into the emotional ballad “Back to December,” widely believed to be about Lautner. The lyrics hint at regret and longing, with lines like, “Maybe this is wishful thinkin’ / Probably mindless dreamin’ / But if we loved again, I swear I’d love you right.” Lautner confirmed in a 2016 Facebook Live that the song was indeed about him.

The song marked a breakup ballad that painted Lautner in a good light, unlike many of Swift’s other breakup songs. While Swift hasn’t remained friendly with many of her exes, Launter is a totally different story. The pair have actually created a brand new friendship out of the ashes of their failed romance.

While many exes drift apart, Swift and Lautner took a different path. In July 2023, Swift dropped the music video for “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version),” starring Lautner alongside Joey King and Presley Cash (via People).

Swift and Lautner Redefine Friendship

The video, directed by Swift, features a heist plot where Lautner performs his own stunts to help Swift reclaim her music. At her Kansas City Eras Tour stop, Swift brought Lautner onstage, praising him as a “very positive force” during the making of her Speak Now album and noting that he and his wife have become some of her “closest friends.” Lautner’s current wife, also named Taylor, is also in on the friendship.

“We stayed friendly, we would see each other now and then. But we then did fall out of touch and didn’t talk for a while,” Lautner said in 2024. “I’ve always had the deepest respect for who she is as a person before anything else. Honestly, I would say one of the greater things to happen in my life over the last year is the rekindling of our friendship.”

In a world where celebrity breakups often lead to tabloid drama, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner’s journey from young love to genuine friendship is refreshingly mature. Their story is a testament to the idea that with time, growth, and mutual respect, even the most high-profile romances can evolve into meaningful connections.
