The Conners is set to premiere on Tuesday night, and fans are dying to know what happened to the character of Roseanne. The show finally revealed how they wrote Barr’s character off, and some fan may find the storyline controversial.

The Conners reveals Roseanne’s shocking death

According to an October 16 report by Yahoo! via Variety, The Conners is said to have jumped right into the absence of Roseanne, and told fans immediately what happened the beloved fictional family’s matriarch.

The episode reportedly reveals to fans that Roseanne is in fact dead. However, the character didn’t die from a heart attack, or is surgery as some fans believed she would. Instead, she passed away due to an accidental opioid overdose.

The news isn’t exactly shocking since Roseanne Barr herself revealed that her character was set to die due to an overdose. However, seeing it will likely strike a chord with many viewers.

The show will pick up three weeks after Roseanne’s devastating death, and her her husband, Dan Conner (John Goodman) is in a bad place. When he finds a bottle of pills that Roseanne got from a friend he loses it. He blames the woman, named Marcy, who is played by special guest star Mary Steenburgen.

However, when Marcy later comes to Dan’s front door he realizes that the situation was much more complicated that he originally realized.

Iconic TV character killed off her own show

The Conners will reveal that Roseanne and Marcy were both a part of a neighborhood group that would try to help each other out when their prescriptions were simply too expensive from them to afford. Marcy claims that she never would have given Roseanne the pills if she knew she had a problem.

Of course The Conners will still try to deliver some laughs through the tears, with original cast members, Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, and Laurie Metcalf all returning for the Roseanne spin-off series in hopes of bringing the beloved family back to fans, despite the fact that Barr was fired from the show earlier this year for making racially insensitive comments about former Obama aide, Valerie Jarrett, via her Twitter account.
According to the People Magazine, both John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf recently spoke out about bringing the Roseanne cast back to film The Conners, revealing that it felt right to keep the show going following Barr’s exit.

“There was a debt owed to this fictional family. We want to finish telling this story,” Goodman stated.

“There was a lot of risk involved, but we all decided as a group to take the risk, knowing that we could be judged by deciding to come back,” Metcalf chimed in.

The Conners airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on ABC.
