Get ready to say goodbye to the Heck family. ABC’s The Middle has officially been cancelled. The show announced this week that it will end its run after the upcoming Season 9.
According to TVLine, the end of the series has been in the works for awhile, and did not come as a surprise to The Middle cast, Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher, and Atticus Shaffer. Executive producer Eileen Heisler revealed that the cast was informed during Season 8 that Season 9 would be the last.
“It was important to have a year to say goodbye. We want to be able to tell all the stories,” she revealed, adding that because the series is based on a family, it could go on for ten more years following new relationships. However, that won’t be the case for The Middle, as fans will spend Season 9 getting closure and saying goodbye to Mike, Frankie, Axl, Sue, and Brick Heck.
The Middle started back in 2009 and was a great addition to ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block, which then included Modern Family and Cougar Town. Last season, the show was moved to Tuesdays to complete the network’s second night of comedy. The final season of the show is set to debut on ABC on Tuesday, October 3, and will be a very sentimental season for fans as they prepare to see the end of the the Heck family story.
What are your thoughts on The Middle being cancelled by ABC? Will you be sad to see it go after the upcoming Season 9?
