However, one new theory claims that the Fisher brothers’ mother, Susannah, may actually be to blame for the character’s intense love triangle.

Right from the start, fans of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” learn that Belly’s mother, Laurel Park, and Conrad and Jeremiah’s mother, Susannah Fisher, are best friends. The pair met in college and formed a lifelong bond. Their friendship led them to spend every summer together in Cousins, and raise their kids together along the way. From the moment Belly was born, Suzannah says she knew she would end up with one of her boys, but which one?
Susannah’s dream to marry Belly off to one of her sons may have been the thing that created the intense love triangle between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. At least, according to one Reddit thread. Of course, fans had plenty to say about the theory. “I think Susannah was a dreamer and looked at life with rose-colored glasses, often to a fault. It put a ton of pressure on all the kids,” one person wrote.
TSITP fans weigh in on Susannah’s part in the Conrad/Belly/Jeremiah mess
“I partly agree when Susannah puts this big weight on Belly and Conrad, it’s unfair,” another said. “Yes I blame her a lot,” another commented. “Yes. She’s the problem,” one fan agreed. However, others didn’t find anything wrong with Susannah’s dream of making Belly her daughter-in-law.
“I’ve read a lot of books about childhood friends who both their moms ‘planned their wedding as they were growing up’ and stuff, idk I just find it normal in the book world,” said one Reddit user.. “It’s not toxic for her to daydream about Belly ending up with one of here boys, she loved them all and wanted the best for all of them. She didn’t push for anyone to be with anyone,” another explained.
No matter where you land on this side of the debate, most “The Summer I Turned Pretty” fans will agree that Susannah was a loving mother to her sons. Yes, she wanted to see Belly end up with either Conrad or Jeremiah and made no secret of that. However, whether or not she’s to blame for the drama is questionable.
