Tyler Christopher was reportedly found dead inside his San Diego home on Tuesday. The death was confirmed after a friend of the actor went to check on him and found him unresponsive at his apartment. Sadly, the friend allegedly found Christopher in his bedroom and called 911. However, the actor had reportedly been dead for some time before emergency services got to him.
Tyler’s former “General Hospital” co-star Maurice Bernard broke the news of the actor’s death. “A truly talented individual that lit up the screen in every scene he performed and relished bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting,” Maurice stated.
“Tyler was a sweet soul and wonderful friend to all of those who knew him. Tyler was an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment who openly spoke about his struggles with bipolar depression and alcohol.”
Tyler’s most memorable roles include Nikolas Cassadine and Stefan DiMera
Tyler Christopher’s most memorable soap opera roles include his “General Hospital” character Nikolas Cassadine. Christopher portrayed the role on and off for two decades, starring in 1,200 episodes of the sudser. He made his debut in 1996. In addition, the actor also won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series during his final stint as Nikolas in 2016 (via ABC News).
He later moved on to originate the character of Stefan DiMera on “Days of Our Lives.” The character was revealed to be the long-lost son and namesake of Salem’s biggest villain, Stefano DiMera. The character became a huge fan favorite. However, actor Brandon Barash took over the role when Christopher exited the soap.
In addition to his soap opera roles, Tyler also appeared on shows such as “Angel,” “CSI,” “The Lying Game,” and “Charmed” throughout his career. However, it was his soap opera work that made him a household name, sadly, the actor had openly struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues.
