“The Walking Dead” aired the Season 6 mid-season premiere on Sunday night, and fans were not disappointed. In one of the most action packed episodes of all time, Rick, Carl, and the rest of the gang faced the biggest heard of walkers yet.

‘Walking Dead’ Shocker: Is Carl Alive, What Comes Next?

During “The Walking Dead” mid-season premiere the entire group ended up coming together for the first time in a long time. The episode picked up right where the mid-season finale left off with Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham facing Negan’s group. However, the exchange was a short one after Daryl took matters in to his own hands and used a rocket launcher to kill the group by blowing them to pieces.

Meanwhile, back at Alexandria, “Walking Dead” viewers watched as Rick, Jessie, Michonne, Carl, Gabriel, Sam, and Ron all walked among the zombies in hopes of escaping. When they realized just how many walkers there were Rick decided that they needed to get to the quarry and cause a diversion to help draw the walkers out. Rick gives Judith to Gabriel, who promises to keep her safe and take her to the church. Jessie tells Sam to go as well, but he refuses to leave his mother, which turns out to be a big mistake.

Same begins to freak out over the walkers, remembering what Carol once said to him, and ends up being eaten alive. Jessie, in shock can’t move and starts to go down with him. Jessie, who is engulfed by zombies won’t let go of Carl’s hand and Rick is forced to cut off her arm to save his son. Jessie’s other son, Ron, watches his family die and picks up the gun that Carl drops. Ron aims the gun at Rick, but before he can kill him Michonne stabs him from behind. The fun fires and hit Carl right in the eye!

Carl is alive, but has pretty much the grossest wound imaginable, as “Walking Dead” fans totally freaked out on social media over Carl’s eye shot. Rick runs Carl to the infirmary where Dr. Denise tends to him and then in his anger walks out into the huge heard to kill as many as possible. Michonne follows him and others watch from inside their homes. Eventually, the entire town of Alexandria are fighting together side by side.

‘Walking Dead’ Craziness On The Way

All the while Enid and Glenn are trying to save Maggie, which seems to be working until walkers begin to jump all over Glenn. Thankfully, Abraham, Sasha, and Daryl arrive home at the right moment to save Glenn. They then decide to light the lake on fire, which draws the walkers out of the city. Later, Rick is with Carl, who seems to be waking up after his injury.

So, Carl is alive, but “The Walking Dead” will never be the same. Obviously, Carl’s eye is gone for good and he’ll have to sport some sort of eye patch, much like The Governor did after Michonne took his eye with a piece of glass in Woodbury.

What’s next for Carl? Well, it seems it could one of two ways. He’ll be stronger, smarter, and more determined after losing his eye, or he will become bitter and angry over his huge loss and life change. Maybe he’ll be lacking confidence like many would after such an injury. Either way, there is one thing for sure. “The Walking Dead” just upped the game and fans are so excited to see what comes next.
