Many times in the vast Star Wars galaxy fans of the franchise hear the term “Spice”. One of the first times we hear about this substance is in the Clone Wars animated. The series mentions it a few times throughout the seven seasons. One of the most recent times Spice is brought up is in The Book Of Boba Fett, per HITC.

Boba is faced with a deadly crime family known as The Pyke Crime Syndicate. We also hear the term Spice in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. This comes when as a young woman gives the Jedi Master a jar full of Spice called Glitterstim on the planet Daiyu.

This substance known as Spice has never truly been explained in any Star Wars TV show or movie. However, it has left many fans wondering what Spice really is and what it could be used for. For starters Spice is a mineral. Spice is mined on the planet Kessel. The spice mines of Kessel are worked by slaves such as Wookies from Kashyyyk and Twi’leks from Ryloth.

Spice is a dangerous substance in Star Wars

Often times these slaves would be worked to death. It was cheaper for the Pyke Crime Syndicate who ran the mines to let their slaves die than to feed and water them. These slaves would also where explosive collars that could be remotely detonated in case of an escape or rebellion.

Kessel is not the only planet Spice can be mined but it is most definitely the most famous due to the famous Kessel Run. While Spice can be mined on many planets it also has many uses. The most famous use for Spice would be illegal substances like drugs. Spice could also be used for medical purposes. However, that was hardly the case when these crime families had control of the spice trade. Spice is everywhere in Star Wars. Even Luke Skywalker grew up thinking his father Anakin Skywalker worked as a navigator on a spice freighter.

Many fan-favorite characters have dealt with Spice

The illegal drugs made by Spice are highly addictive and dangerous (via CBR). Avid users were known to have stained fingers and faces. This is because the common drug made from spice is sansanna spice. This was a rust-colored powder that looked like cinnamon. It is not known exactly what kind of drug Spice is in Star Wars but it is a known illegal substance.

This is why Han Solo was forced to drop his cargo for the crime lord Jabba The Hutt. (As fans found out in episode four, A New Hope). Remember the assassination attempt on senator Padme Amidala in episode two Attack Of The Clones? This was originally blamed on Spice miners located on one of the moons of Naboo. However, we all know it was really Count Dooku.

So there we have it, Spice in Star Wars. With the limited information, this is the best the Star Wars fan base knows about the drug and the mineral. Spice can be used for good as said before but with all of the crime families having control of the supply it is rarely used for medical reasons. The highly addictive drugs that Spice creates have ruined a lot of the Star Wars galaxy’s citizens and we recommend staying far away from them.
