“Yellowstone” fans have been anxiously awaiting news about the series as the final episodes of Season 5 are yet to be released. It’s been a wild ride for viewers as after the first half of the season, so much drama surrounding the show began. New reports suggest that at one point, Kevin Costner was begging to return to the series. However, fans may not want to get their hopes up for a possible Season 6.
Kevin Costner wanted to return to Yellowstone, but talks didn’t go well
According to Puck News, Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton on “Yellowstone,” reportedly changed his mind about his involvement with the show after initially deciding to exit ahead of the Season 5 finale. Costner’s exit led to the beloved TV series being canceled. The second half of Season 5 will now serve as its swan song whenever it’s released. However, sources claim that at one point, the actor was nearly begging to return to the show.
The outlet claims that Costner’s reps contacted “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan about returning for Season 5 and possibly even coming back for Season 6. Sheridan and Costner even allegedly had a phone call to discuss the terms. During the conversation, Costner reportedly had several demands, including more money and a shortened filming schedule. However, when he demanded the right to review and veto scripts, Sheridan cut off the talks.
Could Yellowstone’s newfound popularity sway Costner to return for Season 6?
Due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood, there is a current lack of new television shows. CBS decided to combat this by repairing “Yellowstone” in primetime, although the series usually streams on Paramount Plus. Of course, the results were out of this world. The ratings for CBS’ “Yellowstone” debut were through the roof. It’s safe to say that even more fans of the show have been born. Sadly, those fans may have to say goodbye to the series as quickly as they’ve found it.
Although, some are hoping that the newfound viewers could be a way to help save “Yellowstone” and continue it into Season 6, with or without Kevin Costner’s involvement. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. It looks like Sheridan is already focused on his next spin-off series, which will reportedly star Matthew McConaughey.
Matthew McConaughey is leading the next Yellowstone spin-off
Not much is currently known about McConaughey’s spin-off, per ELLE. However, fans are hoping that many “Yellowstone” characters will make their way into that show. Characters like Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Kaycee Dutton (Luke Grimes) and more would be sadly missed if “Yellowstone” ended abruptly after Season 5.
