“Yellowstone” fans are still waiting for news and updates about the rest of Season 5. What viewers know is that actor Kevin Costner’s issues with the show’s production caused problems. This ultimately led to the show being canceled. Now, fans are waiting for the final episodes to air. However, the most shocking part of it all is that Costner is said to be in legal control of his character’s seemingly impending death.
Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone contract allows him to dictate John Dutton’s death
According to Puck, Costner has spent the past few months sorting out his divorce and fighting over his “Yellowstone” role. During previous contract negotiations, the actor had a rare provision added. Costner’s contract reportedly includes a “moral death” clause. This means that he has a huge say in the way in which his character, John Dutton, can be killed off the show.
The provision was put in place so that the character can’t and won’t be killed in an embarrassing or shameful manner. This is so that Costner also doesn’t suffer embarrassment at the hands of his character’s fate. Meanwhile, the report suggests that this contract provision is very unusual.
Costner’s demands were too much for Taylor Sheridan
Screen Rant reveals that in July, Kevin Costner and “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan had a tense phone call. The duo had a conversation about the possibility of the actor returning to the hit show. However, Costner had some big demands in order to do so. Costner demanded higher pay and a reduced schedule to have less time on location filming. However, when he demanded the ability to veto the show’s scripts, Sheridan had allegedly heard enough.
After Costner’s demand to veto scripts, Paramount reportedly pulled Costner’s offer off the table and opted to cancel the Western series. Since that time, the actor has threatened to sue the company for breach of contract.
